They were used to divide the Indian population who were already suffering a decline from their civilisational golden period. While Indo-European languages obviously share some ancestry, it's more likely to have spread from India to Europe rather than the other way around. Simply reading any literature from European traders that arrived in India during the 15-16th centuries will paint a more accurate picture: science, technology, trade and education were far superior to Europe and made most Europeans awestruck. Colonialism was the greatest swindle in history.
